MarineGEO is a global partnership focused on tracking the vital signs of nearshore marine life with the goal of understanding the causes and consequences of rapidly changing marine ecosystems.  The Smithsonian's MarineGEO research network uses shared, standardized protocols to connect marine sites in coastal regions all over the world.

MarineGEO Texas expands the Smithsonian’s MarineGEO research network to sites in the Texas Coastal Bend. We are a collaborative partnership of scientists at TAMUCC and UTMSI committed to conducting integrative research from local to global scales while providing world class education and training opportunities to undergraduate researchers.

Bioblitz Summer 2019!!!

MarineGEO Texas has been chosen for a barcoding bioblitz to happen this summer!  The goal of a barcoading bioblitz is to extract genetic material and create a unique DNA barcode for every species in the Coastal Bend.

With the help of Taxonomic Experts from Around the World
and Smithsonian Personnel, an attempt will be made to catch everything that is currently residing in the area.  Meta-genomic methods are useful because it allows for quick and accurate identification of all species in the community.  It can also help identify species present in gut content analysis.

Students enrolled in this summer's class will get to assist in the bioblitz.
